En julio de 2022, el Directorio Ejecutivo del Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) aprobó la primera estrategia para la transversalización del enfoque de género en la institución. A grandes rasgos, busca transversalizar el enfoque de género en sus actividades principales: supervisión, asistencia financiera y fortalecimiento de las capacidades. A pesar de que la adopción de esta estrategia representa un hito y un avance en el reconocimiento de los vínculos entre la política macroeconómica y financiera y la igualdad de género, la noticia fue recibida con cautela e incluso rechazo por parte de activistas, académicos y académicas en el campo de la economía feminista. Es que, más allá de las críticas puntuales que puedan realizarse a la estrategia propuesta, un gran elefante en la habitación se aparece al formularnos una pregunta previa: ¿una perspectiva de género es compatible con la teoría de cambio del Fondo y las condicionalidades que de esta se desprenden?
Magalí Brosio, autora de esta publicación, es licenciada en Economía, doctoranda en la Escuela de Derecho de la Universidad de Birmingham y magíster en Economía Laboral. Su área de investigación se encuentra en la intersección entre género, desarrollo económico y derecho internacional, y desde esas coordenadas aborda este trabajo en el que sostiene que la economía feminista ha demostrado que el modelo económico y las medidas de austeridad que impulsa el FMI impactan desproporcional y negativamente sobre las mujeres.
